Thoughts on Sexism
Feelings of real people...
By: Daisy, Luci, Mark, Lucas and Max
Introduction:
So, it's sexism you want to stop? Well, then you have come to the right sheets of paper. Sexism has been around for a long period in time. This is one of the most horrible and disgusting things that has ever been in this world. What is it you ask? As I said it is disgusting, one sex or gender pushes the other one below and thinks less of them. Our Gr. 5/6 class has recognized that this is horrible and should be eradicated. We have a tiny class but we have gigantic brains and hearts, with which we have put some thoughts on sexism together.
Two girls have chosen and put together a paragraph on what they think. Also, three boys have taken two paragraphs and have put them together.
How women/girls feel about sexism:
By: Daisy and Luci
Sometimes in school boys don't want to sit next to us. We are not telling names but once a boy said (when the teacher said we were to sit next to him), "I don't want to sit next to a girl!"
Sometimes in assignments, boys complain when we are partners with them and say, "Why can't I be partners with a boy?"
Once on a group chat, a few boys were complaining that Daisy skipped grades just to be with Lucie because she was the only girl in her class, which just isn't true.
Once, when we wanted to play a sport with the boys they said "NO."
Whenever we beat some boy at something, everyone else is like, "You got beat by a girl. HA HA," to the boy. Because they think boys are stronger, better and faster than girls.
Some boys think that they should ONLY be friends with boys!!! When Daisy was little, she wanted to be a professional soccer player, but she was so upset when she found out she wouldn't be as famous and she wouldn't make as much money.
Sexism really hurts, and we want people to stop it!
How men/boys will stop sexism:
By: Lucas, Max and Mark
Mark's Perspective:
I think sexism, sucks. I mean you have to admit, men being mean to women is a big part of it! Me being a boy makes me now feel really bad for all girls. It must be horrible to get bullied by men/boys. Just think of it, what if there was an older woman and a teen with a gun. If you were watching, would you say "it's not my problem" or "maybe I should go help." What I'm asking you to do is, STOP SEXISM! If you see a woman/girl getting hurt or rejected, help!
Lucas's Perspective:
"As we can see sexism truly is horrible. What could have caused it?"
What could have caused it? Well, religion could have caused this world wide problem. Religion is so influential that people would do whatever it takes to satisfy it. Biological is also another possibility, until the middle part of the previous century reproduction was very dangerous. Death was possible. Also maybe looks, hair, hands etc. Different looks, long hair, smaller, less muscular (which is often untrue). Culture, could be by what they handled, such as being in the military, farming, etc. The way they are shaped, not specifying. This may not have happened if the parents had pushed for a better choice. On average, there are 321,500 victims (age 12 or older) of harassment each year in the United States. In other words, 5 out of 10 women in that age are harassed each year.
Four Secret Sexist Things You May Have Never Noticed:
- Women's clothing, think about. You walk into Winners or one of those famous clothing stores and you see one of this mannequins wearing women's clothes, not mens.
- Normally, in clothing stores the women's clothes are at the from and the men's are at the back. This shows that people think the women should go shopping fo the family all the time, while the men get the "good jobs." Also, if that did happen, men would GET the money while the women PAY the money.
- Once I, Daisy, was at a soccer game and I went with someone on my soccer team to fill up her water bottle. About five change rooms/washrooms were mens and only one was women's.
- In some stores, restaurants, etc. the men's washroom is closer to the entrance. I think that is because they think that women walk around stores for groceries, clothes, etc... so they make women walk further.
Why Sexism is a Problem:
- It could change people's lives, but not for the better. Lots of people think men are better than women. Because of this (usually with small children), sweet, adorable little girls with pigtails, pink and purple dresses, and the kind of child who wants to become a princess, might want to try and change themselves and become a boy. (PS not all girls need to be in dresses to be girly) If you really think that's the kind of person you are, go for it! I am not saying that you shouldn't be a tomboy, but if you truly are the little princess kind of person, you shouldn't change who you are just because you think someone might like you better.
- It could ruin dreams. Let's say a young female adult really wanted to become an NFL player. She had been dreaming of it since she was a kid. She was so excited, because she wanted to try out for a national team. However, when she was 23 she found out women don't do professional football. Now, she has to find a new dream job.
- It could ruin friendship. Let's say, there was a man and woman. They were both 42 and happily married to different people. They were best friends since high school. One day the woman heard the phone ring, and picked it up. It was the man. He said that last time he was at their house they didn't have any beer. So he said that since SHE was the mother of the family, SHE should go shopping. It wasn't even a big deal, but this is happening in our world over and over again, we need to stop it. The friends were never as close again.
How to Stop Sexism:
- Listen carefully
- Ask them if they want something until declined
- Give them the same salary as men
- Pay attention to them
- Pick them for jobs
- Keep negative things to yourself
- Celebrate their awards
- Etc.
There is no reason to not treat them equally.
Gender has nothing to do with who is better!!!
